Hood awnings represent the quintessential awnings. They are the first that come to mind, the most widespread, practical, and easy to install. Widely used in both private and public buildings, they are not only a functional element but a true decorative component for exteriors. Versatile and adaptable to any style, they can be installed for shop windows, hotel entrances, to protect a private entrance, or customized for any type of commercial establishment. They conform to any architectural style, embellishing facades and entrances, while also providing protection from sunlight and weather conditions.

Hood Awnings: Replacement Procedure

The structure of an outdoor hood awning is very simple, and it is precisely their simplicity that makes them particularly appreciated. The elements that compose it are:

  • Tubulars – to support the weight of the entire structure, usually made of steel
  • Metal fasteners – to anchor the structure
  • Extendable arms – for opening and closing the awning
  • Guides for the extendable arms – to allow the movement of the covering fabric
  • Hinges – to allow the movement of the extendable arms.

The main structure is usually made of aluminum, a material highly appreciated for its lightness and resistance. The aluminum is coated with polyester powders, respecting all the standards and high-quality standards required. The structure is made of extruded alloy and the joints are made of thermoplastic resin or aluminum.

Operation of Hood Awnings

The operation of hood awnings, like arm awnings, can be manual or automatic. In manual operation, the opening and closing of the cover are operated by the intervention of an operator. The movement of a nylon thread, or other synthetic material, which slides on pulleys fixed flush inside the structure, allows the covering to move.

Mechanical operation instead utilizes a small electric motor that, when activated, allows the opening and closing movement of the fabric. The action is triggered through a remote control connected to the movement system.

Covering Materials for Hood Awnings

Variable elements of outdoor awnings, they stand out for material, color, designs, and customizations. Hood awning covers can be made of:

  • Natural fibers (such as hemp, cotton, canvas cotton)
  • Water-repellent fabrics
  • Polyester and acrylic fibers
  • Micro-perforated fabrics
  • PVC

Natural fibers, more than others, are sensitive to weather conditions and the elements. Their prolonged exposure to sunlight, as well as humidity, without proper maintenance, can cause premature wear and tear. Conversely, those made of acrylic, synthetic, or plastic materials offer greater resistance and durability over time. They require less attention and care and maintenance, always necessary, but more manageable.

Hood Awnings: When and Where to Use Them

The great versatility of these awnings has ensured their widespread use. Regardless of the architectural style of the building or the building materials used for the supporting walls, hood awnings are chosen for their versatility and adaptability to a wide range of functional and aesthetic needs.

Curvilinear, oval, radiated, fixed or semi-rigid triangular sail, hood awnings perform excellently as protective and urban furnishing elements. Particularly suitable for covering windows of private homes and commercial shop windows, they can cover several meters in width, providing a very large shaded area.

Triple function for these luxury furnishing accessories that protect from sunlight, shading even very large areas. In addition to the intrinsic protective function, hood awnings are very useful for creating small areas of privacy, safeguarding the privacy of interiors if well positioned and installed.

Furthermore, the energy saving factor should not be underestimated. These shading covers, like arm awnings, allow savings on the use of air conditioners. The larger the shaded area, the greater the energy savings.

Hood Awnings: Installation Procedure

The installation of hood awnings is quick and very straightforward. Despite this, however, their fixing requires the intervention of expert hands, which know how to choose and properly prepare the anchoring surfaces. For this reason, it is always better to avoid “do-it-yourself” and turn to professional experts and experts in the field, such as BT Group. Anchoring to the walls must be solid and stable to ensure safe and long-lasting fastening. Choosing the anchoring points is the most important moment for the installation of hood awnings. A wrong choice could indeed lead to detachment or future malfunctions.

Maintenance of Outdoor Awnings

Outdoor awnings, like any other furnishing accessory, require ordinary and periodic maintenance. They are designed to resist and last as long as possible in outdoor environments and exposure to sunlight and atmospheric agents, but this does not mean that they do not need care.

For their cleaning, it is advisable to avoid the use of steam machines or pressure washers. Their action could be too incisive, risking to remove the various layers of water-repellent treatments. Similarly, it is always better to avoid the use of acidic or highly alkaline products (such as caustic soda or lye), corrosive, or abrasive products. The best thing to do to achieve impeccable results is to follow the meticulous instructions given by BT Group technicians.

Finally, prolonged exposure to rain or strong winds could damage or tear the covering fabric. It is therefore recommended, if the hood awning accidentally gets wet, to wait for it to dry completely before proceeding.
